Dream of getting a full-fledged Modern Airport in North Karnataka is finally inching toward reality as the Terminal of Hubballi Airport will be transformed into a Modern Terminal in 2 years.
Union Minister and Dharwad MP Pralhad Joshi shared the news through his Social media handles. A tweet by him read “I am thankful to PM Narendra Modi & Civil Aviation Minister JM Scindia for approving ₹273 Crores for the Expansion of Hubli Airport Terminal”.
Airport Authority of India (AAI) has accorded the administrative approval for the expansion of the Hubballi Airport terminal project to be executed at a cost of ₹273 Crores.
The existing terminal building of Hubballi Airport will be expanded to 20,000 sq.mt. The expanded terminal will be able to handle 1400 peak-hour passengers (700 Arrivals + 700 Departures).
The terminal will be spread across 2 levels (Ground floor and First floor) with all modern facilities. The expansion is likely to enhance the user experience of the passengers travelling to/from Hubballi Airport.
The expanded terminal will also have 3 Aerobridges making it the first airport in North Karnataka to have Aerobridges. The expansion may facilitate International flights in the coming days.
At present, the terminal of Hubballi Airport spread across 3,600 Square Meters can handle 300 peak-hour passengers (150 Arrivals + 150 Departures).
The expanded terminal is going to increase the peak hour passenger handling capacity by 4.66 times (1400 vs 300) and the Terminal area will be increased by 5.55 times (20,000 sq. mt vs 3,600 sq. mt).
As of now, Soil testing has been initiated at the site for the expansion. After the finalization of the Drawings and Design, the tenders for the expansion of the Hubballi Airport terminal will be initiated.
The expansion of Hubli Airport terminal is likely to be initiated by January 2024. The entire project is likely to be completed within 2 years (24 months). Also, a proposal has been placed to expand the Apron.
For information: Aerobridge is an enclosed, elevated passageway that extends from an airport terminal gate to an airplane. The aerobridge allows passengers to board and deboard an aircraft easily.
As of now, only Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru and Mangalore International Airport have Aerobridges. Hubballi Airport will be the third in the state to have Aerobridges.
