Hubballi Airport likely to be renamed as Sangolli Rayanna Airport

Karnataka government has decided to send the proposal to the central government to rename Hubballi Airport as Kranti Veera Sangolli Rayanna Airport.

The decision was unanimously taken by the Legislative Assembly of the Karnataka government. Apart from Hubballi, proposals will be sent to rename 3 other airports in Karnataka.

As per reports, Belagavi Airport will be renamed as Kittur Rani Chennamma Airport, Shivamogga Airport as Kuvempu Airport, and Vijayapura Airport as Jagadjyoti Basavanna Airport.

MB Patil, Minister of Commerce & Industries and Infrastructure, Government of Karnataka acknowledged that renaming airports is a long pending demand from various organizations.

Responding in the assembly, Chief Minister of Karnataka, Siddharamaiah said ‘Our effort is to perpetuate the efforts of brave Kannadigas who fought against the British’.

However, the move to rename Hubballi Airport as Kranti Veera Sangolli Rayanna Airport has evoked mixed responses from the citizens of Hubballi Dharwad on Twitter.

Many have taken to social media to express their opinion about the renaming of the Hubballi Airport. People have suggested the government to consider well-known names from Hubballi Dharwad.

Few of them have suggested renaming Hubballi Airport Varakavi Da Ra Bendre Airport as his contribution to Karnataka is immense considering that he was able to bring the Jnanapeeta award to Karnataka.

Also, many have suggested renaming Hubballi Airport as Shri Siddharooda Airport. However, the state government has yet to respond to the same. Let’s hope that the government listens to the demands of Hubballi Dharwad citizens.
