Status of Hubballi Ankola Railway line

The Hubballi Ankola Railway line project, one of the most anticipated projects connecting Coastal Karnataka with mainland Karnataka, is making steady progress.

SWR has completed the Detailed Project Report (DPR) and is waiting for the Rapid Action Report from the Wildlife Institute of India (WII) and the Integrated Transportation Plan from the Government of Karnataka.

Both reports are due by mid-October 2024, and the DPR will be submitted to the Railway Board by November. Subsequently, the Railway Board will issue a tender to execute the project.

Details of the Hubli Ankola Railway line: The railway line connects Hubballi in Dharwad district with Ankola in Uttara Kannada (Karwar) district. The total length of the new railway line is likely to be 164.44 km.

Expected stoppages along the route: Hubballi South, Mishrikoti, Kalaghatagi, Kirwatti, Yellapur, Kanchimane, Ramanguli, Sunksal, Honalli, and Navagadde.

Recently, the Karnataka High Court accorded the Green signal for the much-awaited Hubballi Ankola Railway Line project clearing all the hurdles of the project.

Former Prime Minister Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee conducted the Bhoomi Pooja for the Construction of the Hubballi-Ankola Railway Line in 2002. However, the project faced delays due to opposition from environmentalists.

The new railway line is expected to improve the connectivity of Uttara Kannada district with mainland Karnataka and boost the economic activities of the district.
