Responding to the request, Shri Murlidhar Mohol said “In general, the airports are known by the name of the city where they are located, unless another specific name is proposed by the State Government”.

“The proposal has to be supported by a resolution passed in the State Legislative Assembly, which is then considered in consultation with other Ministries/Departments and then sent to the Union Cabinet for final approval” he added.

Apart from Hubballi, Ministry of Civil Aviation has received a proposal to rename Belagavi Airport as Kittur Rani Chennamma Airport, Shivamogga Airport as Kuvempu Airport, and Vijayapura Airport as Jagadjyoti Basavanna Airport.
