A total of 78 cases of Mucormycosis (Black Fungus infection) are being treated at Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS), Hubballi. It includes patients from 12 neighboring districts and one patient from outside Karnataka.
Speaking to the press, Dharwad DC Nitesh Patil said that 18 Mucormycosis patients from Dharwad district are being treated at KIMS, Hubballi. Apart from it, patients from Belagavi-16, Bagalkot-16, Gadag-5, Raichur-4, Haveri-4, Vijayapura-4, Bellary-2, Uttara Kannada-1, Tumakuru-1, Chitradurga-1 are also being treated at KIMS.
At present, 7 hospitals in Karnataka are treating patients with Mucormycosis (Black Fungus Infection) including one each in Bengaluru, Hubballi, Mysuru, Mangalore, Shimoga, Gulbarga, and Manipal cities.
Mucormycosis is a post-covid complication that affects the sinuses, the brain, and the lungs. People with diabetes and other immunocompromised diseases are prone to the disease. Excessive use of Steroids and Contamination in Ventilators and other equipments can also cause the Black Fungus infection.
